This list of fried chicken in Central Arkansas isn’t meant to be a “Best of” list because taste can be subjective. I can’t claim to have had all of the fried chicken in the area. What I can do, however, is to give you a list of some of my favorite Little Rock fried chicken in the area based on purely subjective preferences. This list is for fried chicken, which is exactly what you expect it to be! This is the fifth in the 2018 Favorites lists and you can check out the archive here. This is a stacked list and there are some really worthy fried chickens that didn’t make the list this year. These are the top 3 fried chicken dishes I am craving right now in no particular order.
As a reminder, I am not a critic and I have friends who have or do work at many locations around town including South on Main and Stickyz.
Stickyz – Chicken Fingerz
The simple fact is that the entire menu at Stickeyz revolves around these chicken fingerz. They’ve been at it for nearly 15 years now, so they have to be doing something right. The Chicken Fingerz at Stickyz are large and freshly made, fried to the point of perfection with crispy exterior and a moist juicy interior, and served with an array of optional sauces for your dipping enjoyment! It is easy to overlook them, but that is just because they have been consistent for the last decade and a half
Soul Food goes a long way here in the South and Fried Chicken is an iconic staples of Soul Food. Dave’s Family Kitchen has some of my favorite soul food around, and the Fried Chicken is no exception! The Fried Chicken at Dave’s is the best seasoned fried chicken on this list and is a straight up classic. It’s a plate lunch with sides and for me, the dark meat options with the thigh and drumstick are nearly unbeatable.I have link there to Kat’s Tie Dye Travels because David Family Kitchen doesn’t have it’s own website and she does a great job evoking the space.
South on Main – Fried Chicken Blue Plate Special
Every Wednesday, South on Main has Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese as a lunch special. Every Wednesday I have to stop and think about whether I am going to get a lunch of Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese. South on Main is one of my favorite spots in town, and a perennial contender for a top restaurant in town, but the lunch blue plate shows off how special simple traditional dishes can be in a great space with attention to detail. The Fried Chicken lunch is served with mac and cheese and a deceptive pepper jelly that adds a little something to the dish you didn’t know you were missing. It appeals to people who want to add hot sauce to their chicken and the people who prefer honey in equal measure.
Hot Chicken is having a moment right now having spread far and wide from Nashville, Tennessee. The Root’s take on spicy chicken is something different! You’ve probably heard me sing the praises of The Root’s dinner menu here and elsewhere, but the Berbere Spiced Chicken is the entree that had me fall in love with their dinner in one bite. Instead of indiscriminate hot sauce or a flavor profile from neighboring Louisiana, the Root spices their fried chicken entree with berbere spice from North Africa. It provides a mix of heat and flavor in a fantastic balance. The fact that The Root is only at the Honorable Mention category just drives home how hard the choices on this category are!
The good news is that there are many more excellent spots for next year’s Favorite Fried Chicken, but I had to draw the line somewhere. That’s my list of my favorite fried chicken in central Arkansas right now! Fried Chicken is one of my greatest weaknesses so let me know – What are your current favorites?
