Arkansas Lightning Strikes

Last year’s news that Phil Brandon had built a distillery in the heart of Little Rock caught ablaze overnight on twitter and Facebook. Now, several of the offerings from Rock Town Distillery are in many an Arkansan’s liquor cabinet and Brandon’s little still has evolved into quite an impressive operation.

After mastering Whiskey, Vodka, and Gin, Brandon has moved on to a new beast; Arkansas Lightning. Pot distilled by hand from Arkansas corn and wheat, this stuff is flammable at 125 proof. Its only fitting that it’s caught fire among critics.

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible:

“89.5 – Superbly made.  Clean, oily and very impressive.  Intrigued by the vaguest hint of sweet fresh shrimp on the nose.  Will make a fine whiskey if placed in high quality oak.  62.5%.  New, clear spirit pot distilled from Arkansas corn and wheat mash.”

“Bold aromas of wet grain sack, crushed whole nut, and crusty artisanal raisin bread with a vibrant, silky dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a hot and spicy dusty gravel road finish. Opens up to some attractive macadamia nut brittle and spice cake notes with a touch of water. Very interesting and distinctive; will be great in cocktails.”

Arkansas Lightning also received a 91 rating from the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago.

You may go directly to the source if you’re itching to try it. Rock Town Distillery features weekly tours on Saturdays at 1:30 and 3:00.
